Kaupapa Maori Evidence
Throughout this inquiry we have identified which Kaupapa Maori Principles we would use at each stage and the reasoning for this. As we are part of our school Ka Hikitia roopu we are all very aware of the importance of following the principles of Ka Hikitia and Tataiako. We use all of these Kaupapa Maori Principles to not onlyguide up with this inquiry project but in our everyday practice too.
We believe forming collective visions (Kaupapa) and Growing respectful relationships (Ata) between all key stakeholders is crucial to our success. We have experienced the power of these two principles specifically at the following two stages.
Stage 1The Ka Hikitia roopu met with the lead team to introduce them to the New Lens proposal. At this stage there was resistance but after meeting kanohi ki te kanohi and being able to wananga together we were able to come to a more commonunderstanding. Whilst there were still a few unanswered questions the foundations for a productive working relationship had been established.
Stage 2Once our Ka Hikitia team collectively identified that a strong working relationship between our new sydnicate and the tech team would be advantageous for all, it was the job of each Ka Hikitia member to meet with their syndicates and explain the ins and outs of the New Lens proposal. As the HOD of the Ka Hikitia team and a member of the school lead team Ana was able to gauge the response from each syndicate via their team minutes. It was evident that there was still some resistance coming from tech team through their team minutes. Ana contacted each Ka Hitia member after the syndicate hui to see what the responses were like. Ana and Tina reflected on how the tech hui had gone and then decided along with the rest of the Ka Hikitia roopu that it would be timely and purposeful to undertake our inquiry in order to find a solution, to get people on board and ease any remaining concerns. We as a team along with our Deputy Principal decided that it would be best to meet kanohi ki te kanohi and work together to build a common understanding and begin to plan for 2016. In this hui the HOD of the tech department came through to the staffroom so we went to ask her to join our conversation and from there have arranged to hui together (Ka Hikitia, Tech staff and Senior Management) next term to continue this process.
During times of potential conflict and misunderstandings it is imperative to use the Kaupapa Maori Principles Ata and Kaupapa.
